Care Guide

How to Clean and Maintain Your Cork Yoga Mat

Keep your mat fresh, grippy, and beautiful for years with simple, sustainable cleaning habits.

Hand wiping a floral cork yoga mat with a cloth and natural cleaning spray

Cork is one of the most forgiving, low-maintenance materials you can choose for a yoga mat. Naturally antimicrobial and water-resistant, it repels bacteria and odors far better than synthetic PVC or TPE mats. But like any natural material, it rewards gentle care with a longer life and a consistently beautiful practice surface.

Daily Post-Practice Wipe

After every session, lightly mist your mat with a 1:1 solution of water and white vinegar, then wipe with a soft microfiber cloth. Cork is naturally antimicrobial, so a quick refresh is usually all it needs to stay odor-free.

Deep Clean Monthly

Once a month, mix a few drops of mild dish soap or castile soap with warm water. Dampen—not soak—a clean cloth and gently wipe the entire surface. Let it air dry flat in the shade before rolling it back up. Never machine wash or submerge your cork mat.

Natural Cleaners That Are Safe for Cork

Stick to pH-neutral, plant-based cleansers. Avoid bleach, alcohol, and essential oils in high concentration—they can dry out the cork layer and reduce grip. If you prefer a scent, a drop of diluted lavender in your vinegar spray works beautifully.

Drying & Storage Tips

Always unroll your mat completely after cleaning and let it dry away from direct sunlight. Heat can warp the natural rubber base. Once dry, roll it with the cork side facing out to protect the edges, and store in a cool, dry place.

What to Avoid

Skip the yoga mat sprays with synthetic fragrances, abrasive scrubbers, and soaking baths. These break down the cork surface and shorten your mat’s life. If you practice hot yoga daily, simply wipe more frequently rather than using harsher products.

Longevity Is Sustainability

Every extra year you get from your cork mat is one less synthetic mat in a landfill. With just a few minutes of care each week, your Kaya cork mat can last five to ten years—or more. That is the real meaning of conscious living.
